The San Francisco Board of Education opened the first public school (under the first Free School Ordinance) in California in 1851.

First called the Department of Common Schools, the school department later became known as San Francisco Public Schools, then the Department of Education, and finally the San Francisco Unified School District. The district is run by a superintendent hired by the Board of Education, an elected board of policy makers.
