Duncan and Kirby families of Jacksonville, Ill. William Kirby first came to Jacksonville from Connecticut in 1831 to teach at Illinois College. He married Hannah McClure Wolcott, the daughter of Elihu Wolcott. They had six children, one of whom became a judge, the Honorable Edward P. Kirby. William died in 1851 and Hannah died in 1858. Edward graduated from Illinois College, read the law in the office of Morrison and Eppler and was admitted to the bar in 1862. He married Julia Duncan the daughter of Illinois' fifth governor, Joseph Duncan.
