Nita Sims Breazeale and Hopkins Payne Breazeale were prominent members of Baton Rouge society for most of the 20th century. She was the daughter of Robert Nicholls Sims, Jr., of Ascension Parish, La. Her family included distinguished businessmen, judges, lawyers, and politicians. Nita participated in local service organizations throughout her life, and in 1940 established the Baton Rouge chapter of Bundles for Britain, Inc. This organization was part of a national relief effort to provide aid to the victims of the World War II London bombings. Her husband, Hopkins Payne Breazeale, was the son of a planter and newspaper publisher of Caddo Parish, La. He was first educated as a teacher, but in 1910, he enrolled at Yale Law School. Breazeale enlisted into the army in 1917 when the U. S. entered World War I. He fought in the Battle of St. Mihiel, France, and served as Provost in Charge of Civil Affairs during the U.S. occupation of Germany. After the war, he and Nita settled in Baton Rouge, La., where he established a prestigious law firm.
