Charles Nagel was born in Colorado County, Texas, on August 9, 1849, and moved to St. Louis, Missouri during the Civil War. He received an LL.B. from Washington University in 1872 and did postgraduate work at the University of Berlin. On his return to St. Louis he was admitted to the bar and practiced law there for the rest of his life. He served in the Missouri House of Representatives (1881-1883) and on the St. Louis City Council (1893-1897). Nagel was secretary of commerce and labor in William Howard Taft's cabinet (1909-1913) and was instrumental in organizing the United States Chamber of Commerce. Following his cabinet service Nagel served as a councillor of the National Industrial Conference Board and trustee of the estate of Adolphus Busch. He was active in numerous civic, educational, cultural, charitable, and ethnic organizations. Nagel died in St. Louis in January, 1940.
