Ernst Rowohlt and Kurt Wolff jointly founded Ernst Rowohlt Verlag in Leipzig, in 1908. At the beginning of 1913 the two publishers parted ways, with Wolff, who had taken the initiative to offer Werfel a contract, proceeding to assume sole ownership over the company and to rename it Kurt Wolff Verlag. (In 1919 Rowohlt founded Ernst Rowohlt Verlag anew in Berlin.) Wolff remained Werfel's publisher until 1923. Pick was a friend of Werfel from the circle of acquaintances who had often gathered in Café Arco in Prague. Rudolf Werfel was Franz's father and at this time sometimes wrote on his son's behalf in publishing negotiations.

From the description of Correspondence with Franz Werfel, 1912-1913. (University of Pennsylvania Library). WorldCat record id: 155864286
