Hey was born in England and came to Baltimore in 1816. He then went to Dedham, Mass. to start a small worsted mill. He soon after returned to the Philadelphia area, first to Germantown, then to Manayunk, where he built a factory to manufacture broad cloth. When this failed financially, he moved to Blockley and then Springfield, Penn. There he began a successful business of spinning worsted and woolen yarns.

William H. Story (d. 1907), a civil engineer, was the son of William W. Story (d. 1875) and Maria (Martense) Story of the town of Flatbush in Kings County. He married Myra (or Maria) Bergen in Flatbush in 1872.
