Thomas Harding Ellis (1814-1898) was Private Secretary to his uncle, Powhatan Ellis (1790-1863), who was the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires in Mexico City, Mexico from 1836 to 1839.

Thomas Harding Ellis (1814-1898), was a Richmond, Va. businessman, President of the James River & Kanawha Canal Co., and President of the Hollywood Cemetery Company (1847-1856). During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army rising to the rank of the Colonel. After the war he went to Chicago where he held various posts in the real estate firm Rozet & Ellis, Pullman Co., and later Chicago & Alton R.R., and later became First Auditor of the U.S. Treasury. An avid antiquarian and historian, he was actively involved in the Virginia Historical Society and Southern Historical Society.
