Young Ewing Allison was born in Henderson, Kentucky and began his journalism career there at age nineteen by founding the county's first daily newspaper, the HENDERSON CHRONICLE. He later served as city editor of the EVANSVILLE JOURNAL and the LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL. After 1901 he was editor-in-chief of the LOUISVILLE HERALD.

Young Ewing Allison was a writer and editor for newspapers in Henderson, Ky., Evansville, Ind., and for the Courier-journal and the Commercial in Louisville. In 1887 he founded a trade journal, The Insurance field, and was its editor until 1926. He was a writer of prose and verse, including his poem the "Derelict," written to complete the fragment verse by Robert Louis Stevenson in Treasure island which began "fifteen men on the dead man's chest."

The son of Scotch-Irish parents, Young Ewing Allison was born at Henderson, Ky., on December 23, 1853. He established the first daily newspaper in Henderson, THE CHRONICLE, at the age of 19. In 1880 he moved to Louisville to become city editor of THE COURIER-JOURNAL. He was a co-founder of the INSURANCE FIELD, an insurance trade publication, in 1897, and for thirty-three years he served as its editor-in chief, president, or board chairman. Allison also wrote the librettos of several operas, such as THE OGALLALAS, which was the first American Indian and Scout opera, and wrote a small volume on novel reading called THE DELICIOUS VICE. Allison wrote about music and for musical publications, and on many other subjects, both literary and artistic.

Journalist

Young Ewing Allison, one time member of the editorial staffs of the Evansville, Indiana JOURNAL and of the Louisville, Kentucky, COMMERCIAL, COURIER-JOURNAL and the HERALD, wrote widely on literary and artistic matters. He is particularly known for "The Men's Long," the pirate ballad associated with Robert Louis Stevenson's novel TREASURE ISLAND. Allison devoted the last three decades of his life to editorial responsibilities on the INSURANCE FIELD, a trade publication he founded in the late nineteenth century of which he was proprietor and editor.
