Reuben Peterson was born June 29, 1862 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was educated at Harvard University (A.B. 1885; M.D. 1889). He was in general practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan, from 1890 to 1898. From 1898 to 1901 he was both professor of gynecology at the Post Graduate Medical School of Chicago and assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Rush Medical School. Peterson came to the University of Michigan Medical School in 1901 as professor of obstetrics and gynecology. He remained in this position until 1931. In addition, from 1911 to 1918, Peterson was director of the University of Michigan Hospital.

Dr. Peterson was a member many professional organizations, serving as secretary and also chairman of the Section on Obstetrics and Gynecology and Abdominal Surgery of the American College of Surgeons and was certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1897 he was elected to membership in the American Gynecological Society and served as its President in 1911. He was also a member of the Advisory Editorial Board of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology from the year of its founding until he retired from professional work. Dr. Peterson was a respected teacher and a prolific writer on medical topics.

Reuben Peterson died at Duxbury, Massachusetts, on November 25, 1942.
