Presbyterian minister; pioneer teacher in Illinois; member of the "Yale Band" which founded Illinois College, Jacksonville, Illinois, and Monticello Female Seminary, Godfrey, Illinois; director, Springfield Academy, 1840; co-founder, Illinois Teachers Association; superintendent of public instruction, 1863-1865.
