On July 4, 1861, Samuel Archer King's Queen of the Air balloon, piloted by Seth Simmons, Jr. and accompanied by E. B. Haskell, a reporter for the Boston Herald, took off from Boston. They were blown out to sea and came down in Massachusetts Bay off Nahant, where they were rescued by the schooner Atlantic and the yacht Mist
