John Haas was born around 1876 to John (Jean) Haas and Emma Haas. After the death of her husband in 1881, Emma Haas returned to high school and completed the coursework necessary for a teaching certificate. She taught at Throop Public School for thirty-four years. John Haas went on become a lawyer, and later a judge. He was born and spent most of his life in the old 19th ward, home to Jane Addams' Hull-House and, later, UIC.
For the most part, this collection consists of documents relating to John Haas' parents and to his early childhood and school career. Some photographs, campaign memorabilia, an audio recording, and writings are included as well.
