Martin Hurtig, born in 1929, is a renowned artist and Professor Emeritus in the School of Art in Design. Hurtig received his bachelor's from IIT's Institute of Design in Chicago in 1952. In 1955, he studied at the Atelier 17 in Paris and earned his Master's degree, also from the Institute of Design in Chicago, in 1957. He taught at Michigan State University prior to coming to UICC in 1962.
In 1982, Hurtig was appointed director of the School of Art and Design. The appointment became effective September 1st, when UICC merged with the Medical Center to become UIC.
Hurtig's work has been exhibited at various galleries including the N.A.M.E. gallery, the Jan Cicero gallery, the Columbia College Gallery in Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Ecole Speciale d'Architecture in Paris. He has also received numerous commissions for sculptural murals including from the Waukegan Public Library, The National Republic Bank and the Union Church of Lake Bluff.
This collection contains scattered memorabilia about Martin R. Hurtig. It includes a typed memoir by Eileen Broido about the Navy Pier Campus. It also includes a poster from the Alonzo Gallery in New York City, Brochure for 1990 exhibition at Columbia College Art Gallery with an essay by Sue Taylor. There is also an announcement of an exhibition at the Adele Rosenberg Gallery.
