John Wheeler Letter : October 9, 1862

This is a letter from John Wheeler, a union soldier, to his family and friends in his hometown. Wheeler is on furlough when he writes, describing the bumpy trip he took to get to Blackwells Island, NY. There were a few others who also got furloughs and were travelling with him; he also saw some deserters who were handcuffed and being sent to Fort Lafayette. When he got to Blackwells Island, he receieved several letters and small packages from his family and friends.
