Also known as red pottery, Redware pottery was glazed only on the top surface. The glaze was lead-based and therefore not suitable for food because of the risk of lead poisoning. This pottery was very common in the mid-1800s and people were warned of its dangers and directed to use stoneware instead. This particular piece may be southeast European in origin.
