Hmong immigrants and Michigan residents Tru Hang and his son Fu Hang discuss agrarian life in Laos under several occupying forces, the underpinnings of the Laotian Civil War and how that changed their lives. They recall their escape to Thailand and the challenges of corruption and abuse in the Ban Vinai refugee camp. They describe how those circumstances, as well as the lack of social services for refugees in Michigan, contributed to an entrepreneurial spirit among Hmong who came to the state, contributing to the prevalence of Hmong-operated Thai and Vietnamese restaurants in the midwest United States.
