U.S President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden announces anti-gun violence proposals in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting
Vice President Biden describes the work of his White House task force formed in response to the December 14, 2012, elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut then introduces President Obama who announces anti-gun violence proposals recommended by the task force. He outlines proposals for legislative and executive actions to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, implement universal background checks for all gun buyers, and to establish mental health and school safety measures. Obama also reads portions of letters about the tragedy authored by some of the children who joined him on the dais. Obama concludes the announcement by signing the executive orders.
