From The New England Economical Housekeeper by Esther Allen Howland (1845): Depending on the recipe and use, there are a variety of pestle-like, wooden mallet and hammer types of instruments for tenderizing meat, softening fish, mashing and pulverizing food. These are a variety of types of meat tenderizers, also called meat beetles.
