Biography/Profile
Preparations for studies in horticulture at Iowa State began in 1870 with the hiring of Captain James Mathews as Professor of Pomology. During these early years, Mathews established and expanded the campus vineyards and orchards. By 1871 a Course in Horticulture and Pomology was established at the school and classes in fruit culture were first taught to the junior class that year. Students enrolled in this course not only received classroom lectures, but also received practical training through work in the college garden, vineyard, small-fruit garden, nursery, and orchard. The horticulture program was initially organized as part of the Department of Botany and Horticulture, but in 1874 Professor Henry McAfee was given charge of a newly established Department of Horticulture and Forestry.
In 1877, J. L. Budd was hired as Professor of Horticulture and Forestry. Budd came to develop one of the largest fruit breeding programs in the county and brought cultivars from around the world, notably apples from Russia, to Iowa. The department was approved for graduate study in 1913. The name was officially shortened to the Department of Horticulture in 1947. The department is administratively organized under the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
