The ISU Lectures Program is a collaborative effort between the Government of the Student Body and the Office of the Provost. The Program is under the administrative supervision of the Office of the Provost, which provides funding for staff and facilities. That office also appoints faculty to serve on the Committee on Lectures. The Government of the Student Body provides funding for most of the expenses of visiting lecturers as a part of their annual budget process. GSB appoints student members to the Committee on Lectures and a cabinet-level official acts as a liaison between the Committee and the student Senate.

The coordinator of the Lectures Program consults with students, faculty and administrative offices on possible speakers and advises about necessary arrangements for successful lectures, conferences and cultural events; investigates and provides information on possible speakers and topics; and negotiates fees, expenses and other details of speaker appearances on campus. Once speakers have been selected, the Lectures Program staff assists in financial, promotional and technical arrangements for the events.

The ISU Lectures Program, funded by GSB, is committed to the philosophy that the function of the university is to provide "a market place of ideas." Toward that end, the Committee on Lectures works to bring to campus a broad spectrum of lectures as well as cultural and artistic events. Committee members, selected to represent a cross-section of students, academic disciplines and administrative offices, evaluate the appropriateness of presenters and topics and determine which shall receive funding.

It is appropriate for the Committee to sponsor a program on any subject which is presented in a reasoned manner by a qualified person. The size and diversity of the university require that the Lectures Program include a broad range of topics, both general and specific, which are understandable by the general student population and which stimulate thought and promote new ideas. While appeal to the student population is a criterion for sponsoring an event, the Committee recognizes the need to present topics and issues which may not necessarily be in the mainstream, but may broaden students' awareness.

The Committee seeks to be open to a wide variety of programming requests and to be impartial in its consideration of them. Lectures Committee members are expected to have the vision and imagination to ensure that students have opportunities to learn, act and think in new ways.

The ISU Lectures Program is under the administrative supervision of the Office of the Provost. The Provost provides funding for staff and facilities and appoints at-large members to the Committee on Lectures as well as faculty members to chair the Institute on World Affairs, the Institute on National Affairs, and FOCUS. Membership on both Institutes and FOCUS is open to all interested members of the university community.

FOCUS is an annual festival of the arts at Iowa State which funds special, creative projects proposed by Iowa State students. Non-funded projects are also submitted during FOCUS week to be considered during a juried competition Both funded and non-funded projects are on display through April 30. The visual arts categories include painting, drawing, weaving, sculpture, calligraphy, jewelry, and photography. Dance and drama are a part of the performing arts.

The Awards Program is held Monday of FOCUS Week to formally recognize the creative efforts of the Iowa State students who have submitted entries to the juried competition. Many of these students have majors outside of the arts and are an important part of the efforts of FOCUS to promote and support the artistic side of this highly technical institution.

Since 1968, the Institute on National Affairs has offered an annual symposium on a topic of national interest at Iowa State. Membership on the planning committee for the Institute on National Affairs is open to all students, staff and faculty on campus and interested individuals in the community. Funding is provided by the Government of the Student Body.
