Biography/Profile

The Department of Applied Art was first recognized as a department in the Division of Home Economics in 1919. Periodically it had been combined with Textiles and Clothing as a part of the Department of Domestic Art. Also in 1919, the curriculum in art education was initiated. In 1923, the department began offering a Master of Science degree. In 1968 the degree was changed to Master of Arts. The department was incorporated into the College of Design in 1978. The name was changed to the Department of Art and Design in November 1978. In 2010, the Department was divided into four programs: Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Integrated Studio Arts, and Interior Design. The four programs were made full departments in 2012 and the Department of Art and Design ceased to exist.
