Biography/Profile

The United States Office of Education, along with institutions of higher learning, started a cooperative effort in 1935 to study college curricula in order to determine what was relevant college coursework. Textiles and clothing conferences were held as part of the effort to reassess college curricula in home economics. Eastern, central and western regional meetings of textiles and clothing professors were held on a regular basis starting in 1944.

The first national meeting of the three regions was held June 20-22, 1959, in Madison, Wisconsin. A National Steering Committee was created to better coordinate the efforts of the three regions. The National Steering Committee was authorized to write a constitution for the organization in 1968 and by 1970 all three regions had accepted it. According to the constitution, the three regions became affiliates of a national organization, which was called the Association of College Professors of Textiles and Clothing, Inc.

A Futures Committee was formed in 1983 to discuss the foundations of textiles and clothing instruction and to determine potential courses of action for the organization. In 1988 the committee determined the organization should become a national unit with annual national meetings. The name was changed in 1991 to the International Textiles and Apparel Association to reflect its expanding international influence and membership.
