Biography/Profile

The YWCA at Iowa State University was formed in 1889 when the Christian Association of the Iowa Agricultural College was divided into the YWCA for women and the YMCA for men. Christian associations were formed to meet the spiritual needs of the students and faculty, since attending services in Ames was hampered by poor road conditions and a lack of public transportation.

Currently, the YWCA strives to eliminate racism and empower women. They offer a safe place for women and girls, encourage strong women leaders, and champion women's rights and civil rights.
