Akseirad, Rabbi Eileen Kollins, President NER TAMID HONORS MARILYN GLOVINSKY CONGREGANT OF THE YEAR AND ALL NEW MEMBERS OF OUR CONGREGA?TION On Friday evening, Novem?ber 9th the entire Congregation will come together to honor our Congre?gant of the Year, Marilyn Glov- insky. This is the third year we have set aside a special Sabbath to honor one of our own, an individual whose deeds and caring have made her a very special member of the Temple. When we were struggling just to survive, Marilyn was here. Working in the office, staving off the creditors, and just being here for emotional and intellectual support, Marilyn was here. It is especially gratifying for everyone at Ner Tamid to honor this valued member of our Congregation. We will also be honoring all our new members, and there are quite a few. This year we have been blessed with unprecedented growth and we can?t wait to honor these families. A special picture taking session will take place at 7:30 p.m. The Membership Committee has planned an interesting evening not to be missed. Come join our Temple family!Congregation Ner Tamid Rabbi's Message Every organization has a means of measuring growth and of making generalized conclusions about its membership. In the Reform movement we are part of an overall umbrella organization entitled ?The Union of American Hebrew Congregations?. This organization not only brings legitimacy to what we do, it provides invaluable support and guidance to our Temple. One vehicle that the UAHC has chosen to categorize Temples is according to size. Sizes of Congregations range anywhere from an ?A? (under 120 Family units) to an ?E? (over 900 family units). Over the past three years our Congregation has grown remarkably through various stages until we are now firmly rooted in the category of a ?C? (Congregations with between 300 - 600 family units). In short, we are no longer a small Temple! This fact was apparent for any and all attending High Holiday Services. Over 700 seats were filled to capacity! For anyone attending Friday night services they can see the increasing number of new faces. It is evident when one looks at our religious school which now contains over 150 students. And too, it is obvious when one looks at the Temple budget which has grown by 100%. We all know that growth brings many challenges. But growth can also bring many new opportunities - opportunities especially for involvement and new ideas. It is all too easy for someone to join the Temple and be seen once or twice a year. Perhaps some prefer to maintain their membership that way. On the other hand, for the Temple to grow successfully, we need your help. With two/thirds of our membership having been involved for less than three years, the majority of our membership are ?newcomers!? We need you to become an involved part of the Temple by joining our Sisterhood, Brotherhood, Golden Chai, or any number of Temple committees. Often times you will hear a plea for money. This is a plea for your time. If you want to help shape the growth of the Temple there is no time like today to become involved. Sure, it may take a while to learn the ropes. Sure, it may take a while to learn the ?ins and outs? of the Temple. But this is true of any organization. With a little time, and a little effort I know that you will find Temple involvement both rewarding and fulfilling. In the next few months our membership committee will be launching a new Temple program called ?Dinner for Eight?. It is a program with a simple idea. A host family would invite eight other Congregants to their home to have dinner, socialize and meet each other. With this program we hope that our members will be able to make new friends and feel a greater sense of involvement in the Temple. If you are interested in learning more about this program or hosting a ?Dinner for Eight? at your home, let me or our member?ship chairperson, Mary Fox know. One final thought, on Novem?ber 9th at Sabbath Services we will be honoring Marilyn Glovinsky as ?Con?gregant of the Year?. Each year this honor is bestowed upon a Congregant who has given unselfishly of his/her time to help our Temple. This special congregant serves as a mentor for all incoming new members reminding them of the importance of Temple in?volvement. I do hope that all our members will come for this special Shabbat to welcome our new members and to pay tribute to Marilyn Glov?insky who has worked so hard for so many years. It should truly be a Sab?bath to remember. Sincerely, Sanford D. Akselrad PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Once a year we celebrate Thanksgiving, a holiday actually based on Sukkot from the Bible. The Pilgrims, students of the Bible, rediscovered this tradition, when our country was in its infancy. Certainly the holiday has evolved throughout the generations. Early settlers did not schedule their turkey dinners around Macy ? s parade or football games. But the concept of thankfulness remains. Here at Ner Tamid we have much to be thankful for this year. We are a viable, growing, respected congregation in the community. Our Rabbi Akselrad is caring, dedicated to our people and our needs. His work days last at leas 132 hours each. Here children, adults, and seniors all enjoy his sincerity and scholarship. I am thankful for our synagogue leaders and membership who work long and hard to ensure our success. Unless you serve in an Executive Board capacity, you never know how much is happening behind the scenes. To many of our Board and several congregants as well, there is no such thing as a day without a Ner Tamid meeting, telephone call, or discussion. Our small, but hardworking professional staff is also something to be thankful for this year. On a personal note, Thanksgiving always makes me remember to be thankful for the good health of myself and my family, for my children as they emerge into young adults (whether I am ready for that or not), and for my parent?s long and happy lives. So much to be thankful for - perhaps we need more than one ?official? Thanksgiving annually. EileenCongregation Ner Tamid ANNUALHANUKKAH BAZAAR On Sunday, November 18, 1990, the Sisterhood of Congregation Ner Tamid will be hosting their Annual Hanuk- kah Bazaar from 12:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 2761 Emerson Avenue, Las Vegas, NV. There will be food, fun and excitement for all ages. Come sample our fabulous culinary delights and browse through our fine selection of holiday gifts. Tables are still available for interested parties to show their wares. For more information regarding tables, call Mary Fox at 456-4452. TOT SHABBAT Marie your calendars now for this successful program once again this year. Tot Shabbat is a special Sabbath morning program designed for children 2-5 years of age and their siblings. Last year over 80 children participated in the TotShabbatprogram. Geared especially for younger children, Rabbi Akselrad will conduct a special abbreviated serv?ice for the children. Following services, children will participate in exciting arts and crafts projects and have lunch to complete a fun filled morning. Plans for Hanukka Party are in the works. Please volun?teer your help to make this a beautiful event. Dorothy Herman President WHfTT IS HAPPENING TO THE PRESCHOOL? Our plans to launch a Temple Preschool are continuing unabated. Congregants and prospective congregants continue to ask, ?When will you have a preschool?? The answer depends upon our membership. Our goal has been to find a donor to build a playground and to raise $25,000 to launch our preschool. Thus far we have found a donor for our playground (!) and have raised $12,500. We are half way to our goal! Many ask why do we need to raise so much money to launch a preschool? There are several reasons: 1. ) It is anticipated that the school will loose money for at least the first tow years of operation (we will need about 30 students to break even). Money is needed to carry us through this time. 2. ) A director for the school would have to start before the school was in place. This director would have to be paid before there was any income from school registration. 3. ) Asa new school we would be competing for students with other preschools in the community. We would need to advertise heavily to get the word out about our school. Promo?tion can be very expensive. 4. ) A great deal of equipment needs to be purchased to provide for the school. While much of this equipment would last for many years, the initial start up costs are extremely expensive. Congregants can be helpful in trimming the cost of this area by donating good quality used toys to the Temple. Even now several congregants have donated beautiful items that are being stored in anticipation of our preschool. The County Commissioners have given us two years to launch our school. One year has already passed. The Temple?s goal is to launch our preschool by fall 1991. Can we count on your support?
