On this day in 1848, the first public appeal for women's suffrage was delivered, and a new movement for equality was born. Over the next 70 years, women continued their fight for suffrage, which culminated in women winning the right to vote with the adoption of the 19th Amendment in 1920. On Thursday, I will introduce a resolution expressing the sense of Congress that a day should be established to commemorate the suffragists who fought for and won the right of women to vote in the United States. This resolution was inspired by two young girls from Southern Nevada who began a petition at their school in support of a day to commemorate women's suffrage. Please join me and these two exceptional young ladies from Southern Nevada, for a reception from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 14th, in 439 Cannon to honor the brave women suffragists who secured the right to vote for American women.
