Opening Wednesday in El Rancha Vegas' Lounge is one of the pioneers in Dixieland Jazz, Sharkey. Bonano and his quintet. It is not just my opinion, but Louis Armstrong's as well, that Sharkey and his boys are the greatest Dixieland aggregation in existence today. I remember see- ing him in the Blue Room of New Orleans* Roosevelt Hotel about three years ago. Supposed to play for a four week's engagement, they broke all house records by staying six months. Which calls to mind a little story. Each summer New Orleans has its Pop Concerts. Four years ago after six weeks of operating in the red, the concert fathers decided to do. something about this sad state of affairs. Why not, they mused, invite Sharkey Bonano and his crew to take a regular part in the concert *pro-.. grams? Why not have Sharkey it demonstrate to the audiences the conception and growth of this solely, American creation, Dixieland Jazz?
