Abstract

The collection is comprised of professional communication, memoranda, newspaper clippings, membership cards, and manuals from 1930 to 1984 that belonged to Las Vegas, Nevada police officer, Joseph T. LaVoie. The collection contains material about LaVoie's police work, his involvement with various labor organizations, and his work with childrens groups such as the Friends of Youth. The material about LaVoie's work as a police officer dates from 1946 to 1966, when the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was known as the City of Las Vegas Police Department.

Scope and Contents Note

The collection is comprised of professional communication, memoranda, newspaper clippings, membership cards, and manuals from 1930 to 1984 that belonged to the Las Vegas, Nevada police officer, Joseph T. LaVoie. The collection contains material about LaVoie's police work, his involvement with various labor organizations, and his work with childrens groups such as the Friends of Youth. The material about LaVoie's work as a police officer dates from 1946 to 1966, when the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was known as the City of Las Vegas Police Department. The collection includes correspondence both to and from LaVoie during his tenure as a police officer. The correspondence describes LaVoie's work as a police officer and his aspirations to hold various public offices. Also included are newspaper clippings mentioning LaVoie as well as certificates and commendations he earned. The collection also covers LaVoie's civic involvement in the Friends of Youth program and as vice President of the of the Clark County Democratic Party. Also included are membership books for various teamster organizations and LaVoie's Boy Scout membership cards.

Biographical / Historical Note

Joseph Theodor LaVoie was born in St. Boniface, Canada on March 28, 1916. Around 1920, the family moved to Los Angeles, California. In 1939, LaVoie moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, and began work at the Rheem Manufacturing Company in Henderson. In 1946, LaVoie joined the City of Las Vegas Police Department as a motorcycle officer where he worked as a police officer for twenty years, retiring as a sergeant in 1966. From 1967 to 1971, LaVoie worked as chief of security for the Bonanza Hotel and Casino. LaVoie ran unsuccessfully for public office for the positions of Clark County Sheriff, Clark County Commissioner of Unincorporated Areas, and for Nevada's State Senate District Three. LaVoie was involved in many civic and labor organizations including serving as president of Friends of Youth, president of the Police Protective Association in 1962, president of the Clark County Democratic Party in 1968, and as the business manager for Teamsters Local 14. Joseph T. LaVoie passed away on February 24, 1995 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
