Grant's home life, the Fortune Club business on Fremont Street, general downtown, Helldorado Parade, and a Mount Charleston picnic. The collection also contains images of Lake Mead boat races including an appearance by Donald Campbell and his water speed world record-setting jet powered boat Bluebird. Biographical / Historical Note
Arthur George Grant, a Las Vegas, Nevada resident from 1951 to 2014, was involved in gaming businesses and real estate. Grant was part owner of the Nevada Club, established Honest John’s Casino, and was owner of Western Avenue Business Properties.
Arthur Grant was born on February 14, 1924 and grew up in Spokane, Washington. His father and brothers worked on the railroad. Grant worked in poker rooms while living in Washington and he was offered a ten percent ownership in the Nevada Club after his move to Las Vegas. After a few years there he entered into a partnership with Norman Little in a small casino called Honest John’s, which was located at N. 3rd Street and E. Ogden Avenue. The business expanded and was later sold to his longtime friend, Andy Tompkins, who renamed it the Lady Luck. Honest John’s was moved to two new locations : Sahara Avenue and 10th Street and Sahara and Las Vegas Boulevard. The Strip location was more profitable, so Grant eventually sold the location at 10th Street. Honest John’s expanded three times while at Sahara and Las Vegas Boulevard. Arthur operated that location until 1977 at which time he retired from the gaming business.
Grant married Jean Marie Kalez Grant in 1953 and had four children: Karen, David, Lauren, and Samuel. Besides the gaming business, Arthur and Jean owned Western Ave Business Properties, with real estate holdings in Nevada and Washington. Arthur Grant passed away on November 19, 2012.
