Future meeting dates are: July 5th, August 2nd, September 13th, (2nd Monday), October 4th, November 1st, and December 6th, 1999 Dr. Steven Saxe Mark Scheiner Jim Lukasiewicz Elaine Steinberg Melanie Greenberg Dr. Gary Markewich Dr. Steven Saxe Gene Greenberg Fran Levien Temple Beth Sholom Annual Congregational Meeting May 17,1999 The Temple Beth Sholom Annual Congregational Meeting was called to order by Sandra Mallin, President at 7:00 p.m. at the Milton I. Schwartz Hebrew Academy. Sandy advised the members that we have had a 20% increase in membership since we moved to the West Side of town. She stated that construction has begun on the new temple and funds in excess of 8 mil have been raised for the Capital Campaign. She thanked everyone for their untiring efforts and especially the Building Committee with Jim Lukasiewicz as the Chairman. She stated that Jim's efforts and the guidance of Ellis Landau has been superb. Sandy next stated that the High Holy Day Committee has already begun preparations for the services that will take place at the Resort at Summerlin. She said that the Early Childhood Center plans are being formulated and to date we have already book 23 B'nai Mitzvahs for the year 2000. She thanked the membership for their continued support in all of the endeavors that are taking place. Sandy called upon Rabbi Felipe Goodman who addressed the membership. He stated that Temple Beth Sholom is like a well-developed plant. He said "we're like a plant that if given the right ingredients and fertilizer will fervently grow." He thanked everyone for their kindness and help in making all events a success. The next report given was by Jim Lukasiewicz, Building Chairman. He stated that the site utilities have begun. He said construction should take approximately 12 months. He said the building would be built in phases, starting with the school, then the main sanctuary, etc. Dr. Steven A. Saxe, Board of Education Chairman, reported that 54 students were enrolled. He said there were 20 new enrollees for the next academic year. A new Director has been hired. His name is Jacob Raijman. Mr. Raijman holds a Masters Degree in Education and is a graduate of the University of Judaism. Dr. Saxe called upon Barbara Lukasiewicz, Youth Chairman, for her report. 1 Mrs. Lukasiewicz reported that the Kadima group has grown from 0 to 30 participants. She talked about the various activities that took place and how much the young people enjoyed them. She said that the high school students were participating in a program called "Talmud and Friends" with the Rabbi and at his home. Dr. Saxe next reported that there are now two different Mommy and Me programs. He said one is for infants and toddlers and the other is called "Shabbat and Me." He said the programs have been well received and will be continued in the fall. Melanie Greenberg, Membership Chairman, reported that there have been several new/prospective member functions. She said that the New Member Shabbat had an attendance of 55 new members. Mark Scheiner stated that 50 more families have joined in the last 9 months. He said that the decline in membership has stopped and the growth process is constantly increasing. Gene Greenberg, Ritual Chairman, spoke about the changes in the Shabbat Services. He stated that Rabbi Goodman has made modifications to the Kabbalat Service and Phillip has begun to take a more active role in the Shabbat morning service. He stated that Rabbi Goodman has held several Havdalah and Meditation (Healing) Services that were well received by the congregation. He mentioned that Murray Leitner has helped with the Shabbat Services. He and Rabbi Goodman expressed their appreciation to him. Fran Levien spoke about Sisterhood's accomplishments and presented a check for $10,000. She said this was the 5th year they have been able to give this amount of money. Sandy Mallin reminded the members that an easy way for Sisterhood to raise funds was for them to sell scrip. She recommended everyone keep that in mind. The next order of business was the election of congregants to the Board of Directors. He said there were 6 positions available and 7 candidates. He introduced the candidates and asked them to speak of their qualifications and reasons for seeking election. The Nominating Committee recommended: Shelley Carroll, Steve Mack, Mark Scheiner, Mona Silverman, Elaine Steinberg and David Underwood. 2 Lauren Frumes was seeking election by Petition. Following the candidates remarks a brief recess was taken in order for the members to vote. Sandy next announced the following were elected to the Board: Shelley Carroll, Steve Mack, Mona Silverman, Mark Scheiner, Elaine Steinberg and David Underwood. Appenzeller Executive Assistant 3 1 TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM Board of Directors Meeting May 17,1999 MINUTES ATTENDANCE Jerry Blut, Rabbi Felipe Goodman, Gene Greenberg, Melanie Greenberg, Maury Jones, Fran Levien, Jim Lukasiewicz, Steve Mack, Sandy Mallin, Rose Raphael, Dr. Steve Saxe, Mark Scheiner, Sharon Sigesmund, Elaine Steinberg and Faye Steinberg. Staff: Louise Appenzeller and Helene Rosen. Welcome: Sandy Mallin, President, called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. in the Temple Office. President's Report: Sandy reported that the Temple project has officially begun. She said that the Campaign has raised over $8 mil. She thanked Faye & Dr. Leon Steinberg for graciously hosting this Hineini Event on May 16lh. She said that Rabbi Jerome Epstein, Executive Director of the United Synagogue of America, was the guest speaker for the evening and made a wonderful presentation. D'var Torah: Rabbi Goodman gave a D'var Torah. Minutes: Melanie Greenberg made a motion to accept the Minutes as written. Motion seconded by Rose Raphael, voted upon and carried unanimously. Board of Education: Dr. Steve Saxe, Board of Education Chairman, reported that Susan Sinai would be leaving as Director of the Religious School. He reported that Jacob Raijman has been hired to be the new Education Director. He will begin his position mid July. Dr. Steve Leibowitz will assume chairmanship of this committee. He will meet with Rabbi Goodman to begin the process of hiring teachers and enrolling students for the fall. 2 Building Report: Jim Lukasiewicz, Building Chairman, reported that there is activity on the new Temple site. He stated that the Religious School would be built first and then the Main Sanctuary. He stated that once the building process begins the project will move rather quickly and the construction should take approximately 12 months. Membership: Melanie Greenberg, Membership Chairman, reported that 53 new families have joined the Temple since August 11, 1998. She said there have been no resignations in the last two months. She said that May was designated as TBS Open House month. She said that the next New Member Shabbat would take place on Friday, May 14th and an Open House Shabbat on May 22nd. She reported that the membership plan is to move out into the community. She said they are focusing on the young families. She said several families have volunteered to invite prospective members to their home for Shabbat dinner on May 14th and will bring them to Shabbat Services that evening. Rabbi Goodman stated that the Saturday morning Shabbat service must also be marketed. He said Board members should try and attend services on Saturday, as well as Friday evening. Steve Mack made a motion to have the Membership Committee give out New Member Shabbat baskets to each new family that joins the Temple. He said they should be permitted to spend up to $25.00 per basket. Motion seconded by Dr. Steve Saxe. Voted upon and carried unanimously. Financial Report: Mark Scheiner, Financial Chairman, reported on the projected revenues for 1999. The March 31, 1999 Balance Sheet has been placed in the Official Minute Book for reference. Nominating: Dr. Steve Saxe, Nominating Chairman, stated that the Nominating Committee recommended the following people to run for election to the Board of Directors: Shelley Carroll Steve Mack Mark Scheiner Mona Silverman Elaine Steinberg David Underwood He stated that Lauren Frumes, a member in good standing, has submitted his name by Petition and will be on the ballot. 3 Ritual: Gene Greenberg, Ritual Chairman, reported that Philip Goldstein, the new Cantorial Soloist, is working on the music for the High Holy Days. He said that someone is needed for the Shacharit Service. He said his Committee has met with the Rabbi and they will be working on the High Holy Day Aliyahs and Honors. Jerry Blut stated that those who contribute their time and effort should be considered as well as those who give their dollars. Gene also said that he, the Rabbi and the Ritual Committee have discussed the time of the Yiskor Service on Yom Kippur. He said the time will possibly be changed but the matter will be investigated thoroughly. Steve Saxe reported that the Resorts at Summerlin is working very hard to accommodate the Temple and everything is going well. He said that the High Holy Day Packets would be mailed in the near future. Annual Meeting: Sandy stated that the Annual Meeting and Election of Directors would take place immediately after this meeting. Healing Service: The next Healing Service will be held Saturday evening, May 22nd at 7:15 p.m. in the Hebrew Academy auditorium. Good & Welfare: ? Rabbi Goodman stated that he feels that Philip is doing very well as the Cantorial Soloist and has been participating in Saturday morning services. Staff: Louise Appenzeller and Helene Rosen. Welcome: Sandy Mallin, President, called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. at Mountainview Hospital. D'var Torah: Rabbi Goodman gave a D'var Torah. Minutes: The Minutes were accepted as presented. President's Report: Sandy discussed the 2nd Board Retreat that was held at her house on March 16th. She brought up the subject of Board Members assuming the responsibility of being Committee Chairs. Discussion followed. Steve Mack stated that he was opposed to this idea and felt it would cause an exclusionary problem. He stated that congregants should be given the opportunity to be Committee Chairs and in so doing would be groomed for Board positions in the future. He further stated that Board members could serve on the committees, without additional responsibility, but more in an advisory capacity. Board of Education: Dr. Steve Saxe, Board of Education Chairman, reported that the religious school children are rehearsing for their production of Fiddler on the Roof. He said that the Mommy and Me program was doing well. 2 Membership Resignations: It was reported that there were no membership resignations since the previous meeting. Building Report: Jim Lukasiewicz, Building Chairman, reported that the Temple architectural drawings have been submitted to the county and that he is awaiting a revised Conditional Use Permit. He said that the matter should be on the Consent Agenda within the next week or two. Gene Greenberg said that he has called Dale Askew and is awaiting his return phone call to find out the status of this matter. Membership: Melanie Greenberg, Membership Chairman, reported that the new membership plan is to move out into the community. She said they are focusing on the young families. She reported that May is Membership Open House. She said that May 21st has been selected as the next New Member Shabbat. She said that various members will be inviting prospective members to their home for dinner that evening and then bringing them to services. Rabbi Goodman stated that the Saturday morning Shabbat service must also be marketed, and Board members should try and attend services on Saturday, as well as Friday evening. He emphasized the importance of Board member. Mona Silverman made a motion that each Board member come to a Shabbat Service twice a month through April and Mav. Seconded by Fave Steinberg. Discussion followed. It was suggested that Louise assign each Director a Friday or Saturday to do the Announcements. Motion voted upon and carried. Louise will send each Director his/her assigned date. If someone cannot make the assigned date, they are to notify the office and advise Louise of their replacement. Jerry Blut suggested that the Steering Committee formulate specific goals and plans for the Temple. Rabbi Goodman said the Temple has to strengthen its image in the community. He showed the Board a publication that his former congregation has done and suggested that something similar be done at Temple Beth Sholom. He stated that this had to be done by someone with experience in the area of graphic design. 3 Nominating: Dr. Steve Saxe, Nominating Chairman, stated that the Nominating Committee recommended the following people to run for election to the Board of Directors: Shelley Carroll Steve Mack Mark Scheiner Mona Silverman Elaine Steinberg David Underwood Melanie Greenberg made a motion to approve the slate and send a letter to the congregation telling them that they may submit a petition, if they wish to run, 10 days prior to the election, pursuant to the Temple's Bylaws. Seconded by Faye Steinberg. Voted upon and carried. Men's Club: Dr. Gary Markewich reported that the Yom Hashoah candles were mailed. He said there would be a Yom Hashoah Service at Congregation Ner Tamid on April 13th for the entire community. Sisterhood: Fran Levien, Sisterhood President, reported that Rabbi Amy Levin from Jerusalem, Israel would be the guest speaker for the Sisterhood Shabbaton. She said that Rabbi Levin has taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary and will speak about "What It Means To Be A Conservative Female Rabbi in Israel" High Holy Days: Dr. Steve Saxe reiterated that the High Holy Day Services would be held at the Resorts of Summerlin and members have already made reservations. He said that informational packets would be sent out in the near future. JFLV Israel @ 51 Celebration: Rose Raphael reported that Federation was holding their Israel @ 51 Celebration on Sunday, May 2nd at the Sands Expo. Faye Steinberg said she would call Federation and discuss this. 4 Annual Meeting: Sandy stated that the May 3rd Board Meeting would be changed due to a conflict. She said she would advise the Board as soon as the new date was confirmed. She also stated that the Annual Meeting and Election of Directors would take place in May at a date to be determined. She said notification would be sent to the Board and congregation as soon as the date was cleared. She suggested that the Board meeting take place at 5:30 p.m., prior to the Annual Meeting, and both be held at the Hebrew Academy. Healing Service: The next Healing Service will be held Saturday evening, April 17th at the Hebrew Academy. Good & Welfare: ?
