Abstract

The collection is comprise of correspondence, magazines, photographs, and brochures relating to the Nevada Test Site outside of Las Vegas, Nevada and the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico dating from 1942 to 2002. The collection was compiled by Jack Livingston and Jacquelynn Smith during their time working at various defense industry locations.

Scope and Contents Note

The collection is comprise of correspondence, magazines, photographs, and brochures relating to the Nevada Test Site outside of Las Vegas, Nevada and the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico dating from 1942 to 2002. The collection was compiled by Jack Livingston and Jacquelynn Smith during their time working at various defense industry locations in Nevada, California, and New Mexico. The collection primarily includes magazines from the Nevada Test site and EG and G Inc. such as The Atom, LASL News, Sage, and Desert Scope. The collection also includes information about atomic safety both in Nevada specifically and the United States as a whole. Some of these booklets were published by the United States Department of Defense Office of Civil Defense while others were published by the Atomic Energy Commission or other organizations. The collection provides information about the type of activities undertaken at the Nevada Test Site and Los Alamos Laboratories as well as information about workers lives as they related to atomic energy and testing.

Biographical / Historical Note

Jack Livingston and his daughter, Jacquelynn Smith, both spent their lives working in United States defense industry. Jack Livingston was born on September 12, 1918 in Denver, Colorado. He worked at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico from 1951 until his transfer to the Nuclear Rocket Development Station in Nevada in 1962. Livingston passed away at the age of 46.

Jacquelynn Smith was born on November 11, 1944 in Denver, Colorado. She graduated from Nevada Southern University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. After graduation Jacquelynn began work for defense contractors who worked at the Nevada Test Site and National Laboratories. Jacquelynn also worked for the defense contractor EG and G Incorporated. Jacquelynn Smith passed away on November 7, 2015.

These records are unprocessed. A rough box-level inventory of the accession was created by Maggie Bukowski in 2018.
