Abstract

The Lorelle Nelson Collection on Atomic Testing is comprised of newspaper clippings, magazine and journal articles, correspondence, press releases, fact sheets, fliers, informational handouts and booklets, and newsletters from approximately 1980 to 2009 concerning nuclear weapons testing at the Nevada Test Site, throughout the United States, and internationally. The collection includes information about anti-nuclear groups, committees, and associations, as well as information on the effects of radiation, nuclear fallout, lawsuits and court cases, events and protests, conferences, and local news coverage.

Scope and Contents Note

The Lorelle Nelson Collection on Atomic Testing (approximately 1980 to 2009) contains materials related to anti-nuclear weapons testing. It includes newspaper clippings describing covering nuclear testing, effects of radiation, protests at the Nevada Test Site and other United States and international locations, local and national anti-nuclear groups, and related issues. The collection also contains newsletters, fliers, and membership information from anti-nuclear testing groups and associations, campaign and conference notes directly related to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, United States Department of Energy (DOE) materials, and radiation studies. Other materials in this collection include magazine and journal articles, photocopies of literature and and publications focused on nuclear testing and war, and transcriptions of individual personal accounts of atomic testing and its effects. The collection contains a small amount of Lorelle Nelson's personal correspondence and notes.

Biographical / Historical Note

Lorelle Nelson was born on April 29, 1941. She did extensive research into atomic testing and co-edited the 1987 book, The Mushroom Cloud and the Downwinders. As of 2020, Lorelle Nelson still resides in Las Vegas, Nevada.
