Abstract

The Dr. Howard Zellhoefer Collection of Artwork contains three paintings collected by Dr. Howard William Zellhoefer. Two paintings are by K. Nakamine of landscapes in Okinawa, Japan from 1949, and the third painting is a 1962 Ferdinand Burgdorffof a desert landscape, possibly Mojave Desert, California.

Biographical / Historical Note

Dr. Howard William Zellhoefer was born on July 23, 1906 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He served as a United States Army Reserve Medical Officer during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the military in 1952 and opened a private surgery practice in Carmel, California. Zellhoefer later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and practiced medicine in Las Vegas and Boulder City, Nevada until 1971. He then worked as a ship surgeon on the Epirotiki Cruise Lines and sailed around the world for many years. Zellhoefer bought a railroad tie house in Tecopa, California in 1969, to which he later retired. He died April 19, 1997.
