Biographical / Historical Note

Founded in 1944, Harveys Casino Resorts began operations in Lake Tahoe, Nevada with a one-room cabin on seven acres off U. S. highway 50. The Wagon Wheel Saloon and Gambling Hall, built by Harvey and Llewellyn Gross, featured three slot machines, two card tables, lunches cooked and served by Llewellyn, and the only 24-hour gas pump between Placerville, California and Carson City, Nevada.

In the 1960s, Gross changed the name of the casino to Harveys Resort Hotel & Casino, and expanded again, becoming the largest hotel and casino in the area with eleven floors and 197 rooms. This trend of expansion continued for the next two decades, but was briefly interrupted in 1980, when an extortionist managed to plant a large and sophisticated bomb in the telephone exchange area of the hotel, ultimately detonating and destroying the majority of the gambling floor and northern side of hotel. Gross rebuilt and oversaw the grand opening of the new Harveys in 1981.

The company expanded in the 1980s and 1990s and currently operates Harveys Resort and Casino in Lake Tahoe, Nevada; Harveys Wagon Wheel Casino in Central City, Colorado; and Harveys Casino Hotel in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
