Abstract

The Jeff Van Ee Papers consist of the papers of environmentalist John Jeffrey Van Ee from 1974 to 2012 that document a portion of Van Ee’s environmental activity, notably his participation on environmental committees in the Las Vegas, Nevada area for water conservation and wildlife protection. The papers are comprised of correspondence, memoranda, reports, studies, newspaper clippings and meeting agendas and minutes.

Scope and Contents Note

The Jeff Van Ee papers consist of the papers of environmentalist John Jeffrey Van Ee from 1974 to 2012 that document a portion of Van Ee’s environmental activity, notably his participation on environmental committees in the Las Vegas, Nevada area. It is comprised of correspondence, memoranda, reports, studies, newspaper clippings and meeting agendas and minutes. The collection showcases the breadth of Van Ee’s environmental interests and the extent of his activism. Since Van Ee was active at a time when Las Vegas’s population exploded and new demands were placed on the environment and its resources, the collection documents the increased importance awarded to environmental issues in both American culture-at-large as well as American national and local governments, especially with regards to water conservation and wildlife protection.

Biographical / Historical Note

Jeff Van Ee moved to Nevada in 1972 and became active in the Sierra Club and the community's environmental issues shortly after he arrived. He was employed by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development from 1971 until he retired on June 3, 2005. In 1987, he was a Legis Fellow and worked for US Senator Harry Reid and the Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee for nine months. Van Ee has also been active in other environmental organizations and activities like the Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Aquavision. Among the awards he received for his environmental work in Nevada are: Nevada Wildlife Federation’s Governor’s Conservation Award in 1983; Friends of the United Nations Environmental Programme 500 Environmental Achiever in 1987; The Giraffe Project designation as a Giraffe in 1991; and the Senator Harry Reid Earth Day 1992 Award. Van Ee also testified before Congressional committees on five occasions concerning public lands issues and remains active in community service groups and committees, both local and national, in support of environmental issues relating to Nevada.

Acquisition Note

The collection was donated periodically by Jeff Van Ee between 2002 and 2015; accession numbers 2003-13, 2008-006, 2013-013, 2015-047, and 2018-030.

Processing Note

Material was processed by Megan Sharp Weatherly in 2010. In 2014 and 2015, as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, Lindsay Oden processed additional materials and revised the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards. In 2019, Maggie Bukowski accessioned the 2018 addition and updated the ArchivesSpace inventory.
