Charles Lanman Papers (1864-1868) contain the title page of the Dictionary of the United States Congress and the General Government, written by Lanman, solicitation requests for biographical information from notable government figures, and written replies. Of interest with regard to Nevada are the original handwritten letters from James W. Nye and William M. Stewart.

Biographical / Historical Note

Writer and journalist Charles Lanman was born in Michigan in 1819. He wrote the Dictionary of the United States Congress and General Government, which eventually became the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress. His career included service as librarian for the U.S. War Department, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the City of Washington Library; head of the returns office in the U.S. Interior Department; private secretary to Senator Daniel Webster; American secretary to the Japanese legation; and assistant assessor for the District of Columbia.
