The Sidney R. Whitmore Collection (approximately 1885-1970) contains land deeds and other documents about Mount Diablo, Nevada; documents detailing parts of his family history; and eight framed paintings of landscapes and portraits.

Scope and Contents Note

The Sidney R. Whitmore Collection (approximately 1885-1970) consists of documents pertaining to property in Southern Nevada, family history documents, and paintings formerly belonging to Whitmore's personal art collection. The collection contains a list of Moapa Fruit Land Company stockholders, a family history detailing Whitmore’s relatives George Burton Whitney and his wife Lovina Syphus Whitney, a quitclaim deed, land deeds for holdings at Mount Diablo, Nevada, and an election ballot envelope. The collection also includes eight framed paintings of landscapes and portraits.

Biographical / Historical Note

Sidney Roxton Whitmore was born in St. Thomas, Nevada on December 31, 1921 to Roxton and Adella Whitmore. He graduated from Overton High School and served in the United States Army as a stenographer during World War II. He met and married his wife, Suzette Fortune Ziza, in 1946 while stationed in Algeria. After the war, the couple returned to the United States and Whitmore earned his law degree at George Washington University. He passed the Nevada Bar Exam in 1951 and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to work as deputy clerk at the newly opened U.S. Federal District Court. The Las Vegas City Commission appointed him city attorney in 1960 and he was later reelected. He also worked in real estate, farming, and ranching, and was a 52-year resident of Las Vegas. Whitmore died on February 1, 2003.

Materials were processed by Christine Marin in 1979. In 2015 as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, John Grygo revised and enhanced the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards. In 2019, Lauren Paljusaj updated the inventory and revised the finding aid.
