Biographical / Historical Note
The Las Vegas Variety Club was founded in 1950 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The mission of the organization was to create a school for children with special needs in Las Vegas. Utilizing the celebrity status of Las Vegas personalities, organizers were able to raise the funds needed to open the school. Celebrity endorsements included those of Jack Benny, Vincent Price, Jane Russell, Red Skelton, and newspaper owner Hank Greenspun. In 1952 the Variety School for Special Education was opened. The Variety Club opened the Variety Day Home in 1956 to accommodate the child care needs of low-income working families. The name of the organization has since been changed to Variety-The Children's Charity.
