Biographical / Historical Note

On January 6, 1937, a group of Las Vegas, Nevada residents established the Cooperative Concert Association of Las Vegas, Nevada. It was part of an expanding community concert movement beginning in the 1920s on the east coast and headed by Columbia Concerts Corporation in New York. The organization changed its name to the Southern Nevada Community Concerts Association (SNCCA) in 1952.

In the beginning, the association could only afford to fund soloists, but by the 1950s and 1960s, it was able to bring orchestras and ballets to the area, as well as several notable performers and groups including soprano Leontyne Price, violinist Leland Chen, the Robert Joffrey Theatre ballet, and the New York Theatre Ballet. The SNCCA held its first season at the War Memorial Building on Stewart Avenue in Las Vegas, Nevada. Over the years, as membership grew, the SNCCA sought larger venues for its concerts, first at the Mesquite Club and the LDS Second Ward Auditorium, then eventually at the Las Vegas High School Auditorium.

In 1977, after several years at the high school, the SNCCA moved to the newly built 1,800 seat Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall located at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). In 2000, the SNCCA made its final move to the Performing Arts Complex at the Community College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, Nevada. Not long after, in 2004, the SNCCA dissolved, making 2003-2004 its final season.
