Biographical / Historical Note

The Governor’s Conference on Nevada’s Library and Information Needs was created in 1974 when congress passed a bill to help improve libraries and the publics use of libraries. “Speak Outs” were organized throughout Southern and Central Nevada to enable residents to express their ideas and opinions about their local libraries along with being represented by delegates. Mike O'Callahan was Governor for the State of Nevada at the time and supported the 1978 conference. The role of the Conference was to learn more about local libraries in order to better fulfill the needs of Nevada’s residents by improving the libraries and the information centers.
