Abstract

The Freda Klein Papers (1967-1997) include a detailed biography and personal reflection penned by Klein, as well as a photocopied scrapbook. The scrapbook is comprised of correspondence and newspaper clippings that detail her career with the State of Nevada Employment Security Department and volunteer work with the Henderson Chamber of Commerce, Private Industry Council, and Soroptimist International of Henderson, Nevada.

Biographical / Historical Note

Freda Klein was born on May 17, 1920. She graduated from the University of Washington in 1942, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. By the mid-1960s she was living in Las Vegas with her husband and three children. In 1966 she began her career with the State of Nevada Employment Security Department. She also returned to school, eventually earning a Master's degree at age 49 and a doctorate at age 59. In 1978 she became the head of the Office of the Employment Security Department in Henderson, Nevada. Klein served on the executive boards of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce and Private Industry Council, and served as the president of the Soroptimist International of Henderson, Nevada, an organization devoted to the welfare of women and girls. After working for the State of Nevada Employment Security Department for over twenty-nine years, Klein retired and began doing volunteer work at the Center for Business and Economic Research at UNLV. She passed away on September 10, 2012.
