The property was built for approximately $1 billion by Circus Circus Enterprises, Inc. on land purchased by the company in March 1995. Mandalay Bay opened on March 02, 1999, and three months later Circus Circus Enterprises Inc. changed its name to Mandalay Resort Group reflecting its newest property. The Mandalay Bay Convention Center, the fifth largest convention center in the nation, was added to the property and opened in January 2003. THEhotel, a new 43-story luxury tower, was added to the property and opened on December 17, 2003. In 2014, THEhotel was renamed the Delano Las Vegas. In 2005, MGM Resorts International purchased Mandalay Resort Group. As a result, Mandalay Bay and all other Mandalay Resort Group properties were rebranded as MGM properties.
