Abstract

The Ruthadele Stearns Doyal Lathrop Personal Papers (1900s-1991) contains scrapbooks, slides, and matted competition photographs created by Ruthadele Stearns Doyal Lathrop, a photographer and ballroom dancer. The scrapbooks include photographs of Ruthadele’s family, travels, and ballroom dance competitions, as well as newspaper clippings and other ephemera. The slides and matted photographs consist mostly of Western landscape scenes, including California and Nevada.

Scope and Contents Note

The Ruthadele Stearns Doyal Lathrop Personal Papers (1900s-1991) primarily contains scrapbooks, slides, and matted competition photographs created by Ruthadele Stearns Doyal Lathrop, a photographer and ballroom dancer. The scrapbooks include photographs and newspaper clippings pertaining to her son, Charles R. Stearns, Jr., as well as photographs of family vacations to Santa Catalina Island, California, Death Valley National Park, and Yosemite National Park. In addition, the scrapbooks include photographs and ephemera from her ballroom dancing competitions. The matted photographs are primarily from photography competitions, with many listing the scores and competition name on the back. They consist of several American southwest landscape scenes and some portraits. The slides include photographs of the 1959 Rose Parade; 1970s Las Vegas, Nevada; Virginia City, Nevada; Lake Tahoe, California; San Francisco, California; and other assorted locations and events.

Biographical / Historical Note

Ruthadele Stearns Doyal Lathrop was born Ruthadele Margaret Tapper on February 17, 1918 in Wisconsin, the daughter of Samuel E. Tapper and Meta G. (Brennecke) Tapper. In 1944, Ruthadele married her first husband, James Anthony Cone in California. They divorced soon after and Ruthadele married Charles R. Stearns and had a son, Charles “Chic” Stearns, Jr. In 1963, she married her third husband, Jerry M. Doyle. By 1969, they were no longer together and she married William O. Lathrop.

Ruthadele was a photographer and ballroom dancer, living most of her life in California and Las Vegas, Nevada. Ruthadele traveled often, taking landscape photographs throughout the Western United States, many of which she entered into competitions. As a ballroom dancer, she competed in multiple dance competitions in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ruthadele passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 24, 2005 at the age of 87.

Photographs were processed in 2017 by Joyce Moore. In 2018, as part of an archival backlog elimination project, Christina Lamoureux rehoused the materials, wrote the finding aid, and entered the data into ArchivesSpace.
