Biographical / Historical Note

Excalibur Hotel and Casino is a medieval-themed resort located on the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada. The property has various attractions, including the Fun Dungeon arcade and the Tournament of Kings show. Circus Circus Enterprises Inc. purchased seventy acres of land on the Las Vegas Strip in 1988 to construct the property. Following an international $25,000 “Name the Castle” contest that drew 183,000 entries, the property was officially named Excalibur on September 28, 1988. Excalibur opened on June 19, 1990, and cost $290 million to build. At the time, it was the largest hotel in the world. A partnership with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) resulted in the WCW Nitro Grill, which opened in May 1999 and closed in September 2000. Dick’s Last Resort restaurant opened in the same space in June 2007. Excalibur was purchased by MGM Resorts International in 2005 alongside other Mandalay Resort Group properties. As of 2019, the Excalibur Hotel and Casino remains in operation.
