The William Thompson Collection on International Gaming dates from 1928 to 2016. The collection materials relate to gaming in the British Isles, Europe, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and North America. The collection contains travel brochures, memorabilia, research notes for William Thompson’s published works, reports on gaming statistics, and photographs and slides from his research trips. Materials also include Thompson's personal collection of gaming industry specific magazines, law review journals, and books with Thompson's personal annotations.

Scope and Contents Note

The William Thompson Collection on International Gaming dates from 1928 to 2016. The collection materials relate to gaming in the British Isles, Europe, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and North America. The collection contains ephemera that includes travel brochures, maps, and memorabilia collected from casinos and resorts from around the world. There are also research notes for William Thompson’s published works, reports on gaming statistics from selected countries, and photographs and slides from his research trips. Materials also include Thompson's personal collection of gaming industry specific magazines, law review journals, and books with Thompson's personal annotations.

Biographical / Historical Note

William Thompson was a professor emeritus of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He taught at UNLV from 1980 to 2010. He earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1972. Before arriving at UNLV in 1980, Dr. Thompson taught at Western Michigan University from 1971 to 1980. He also taught abroad at Troy State University-European Campus from 1986 to 1987. His research interests include administrative behavior, political economy, public regulation of gaming, and ethics.

Dr. Thompson was a leading authority on the gaming industry. He wrote Legalized Gambling: A Reference Handbook in 1994 and Native American Issues in 1996. He also co-authored: Casino Customer Service -- The WIN WIN Game in 1992, The Economic Impact of Native American Casinos in Wisconsin in 1995, The Social Cost of Gambling in Wisconsin in 1996, and Crime and Casinos in Wisconsin in 1996. Thompson lectured extensively on the topic of international casinos and his articles on gaming have appeared in numerous publications, including a 45-article series for the Las Vegas Sun on world casinos.

Thompson passed away on August 12, 2019.

Acquisition Note

Materials were donated in 1987 and 2002 by William Thompson and in 2021 by Kaye Thompson; accession numbers 1987-063, 2002-023, and 2021-020.

Processing Note

Materials were processed by Special Collections and Archives staff in 2002. In 2014, as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, Lindsay Oden revised and enhanced the collection description and entered the data into ArchivesSpace. In 2017, as part of an archival backlog elimination project, Brooks Whittaker and Chris Bruce rehoused and arranged the materials, and revised the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards. In 2021, Tammi Kim minimally processed the 2021 addition and updated the finding aid.
