Biographical / Historical Note
Thomas Cave Wilson (1907-1984) was born in Phoenix, Arizona and grew up in Reno, Nevada, graduating from the University of Nevada in 1930. He pursued a journalism career in California before returning to Reno to establish the city's first advertising agency in 1939. Wilson also co-founded the first Nevada Day Celebration and parade in 1938, served as a Trustee of the Nevada State Museum, and served as chairman of the Nevada Centennial Commission from 1962 to 1964.
In the 1940s, Wilson developed the Pioneer Nevada historical series sponsored by Harold's Club, and convinced Harold's Club owner Raymond I. "Pappy" Smith to create the Harold's Club Scholarship Program, putting dozens of Nevada students, including historian James Hulse, through the University of Nevada in Reno, Nevada. Besides Wilson's active community involvement, he was an avid outdoorsman and amateur historian with an interest in the many westward trails in Nevada. As an advisor to the U.S. Board on Geographical Names, he named over fifty mountains, canyons, and valleys in Nevada.
