Abstract

The collection is comprised of architectural drawings (1952-1997) completed by American architect, Ethan Jennings Jr. and/or his architectural firm, Ethan Jennings Jr., AIA, CSI and includes Jenning's work from the firm of John Badgley, AIA, where Ethan Jennings Jr. worked in Southern California during the 1950s, as well as work Jenning's completed with Americo Inc., and Tolosa Group. The collection contains 217 sets of drawings, 6 boxes of project records, and 8 flat files of oversized material from over 200 different projects primarily located in California with some projects located in the Las Vegas area. The materials feature hand-drawn architectural drawings, ranging from preliminary sketches to construction documents. The drawings also contain work from consultants, engineers, and other architects who collaborated on the development of the various projects. The drawings include: commercial, industrial, professional, civic, residential, and religious buildings of varying scales, such as libraries, apartments, warehouses, office developments, schools, military buildings, churches, and custom single-family homes located throughout California and Las Vegas. The drawings also include a number of additions, remodels, and renovations. The collection also contains project records like structural calculations and drawings, project manuals and specifications, bid documents, and professional correspondence.

Scope and Contents Note

Established in San Luis Obispo, California, Ethan Jennings Jr., AIA, CSI embodies Ethan Jennings Jr.’s design philosophy and reflects local cultural characteristics. Jenning’s firm worked on a wide variety of projects, such as educational facilities, office buildings, religious buildings, and both single and multi-family residences. Jennings Jr. and his firm worked on over 200 projects contributing significantly to the growth and development of Coastal California and Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection contains 62.53 cubic feet of materials including architectural drawings and project records.

The architectural drawings contain both Jenning's work and work from a number of consultants, engineers, and other architects who collaborated on the development of the various projects and include several sets of original construction documents that were used for reference while working on additions, alterations, expansions, and remodels to the original buildings. A typical set of construction documents may include: title sheet, index, topographic survey, supplemental resurvey map, plot plan, site plan, floor plans, exterior elevations, interior elevations, building sections, wall sections, construction details, foundation plans, roof plans, reflected ceiling plans, structural plans, structural details, electrical plans, electrical details, electrical diagrams, plumbing details, plumbing plans, plumbing diagrams, interior and exterior perspectives, mechanical plans, mechanical details, mechanical diagrams, and landscape layout. The project records include: structural calculations and drawings, project manuals and specifications, bid documents, and professional correspondence.

Biographical / Historical Note

Ethan A. Jennings Jr., AIA, NCARB, CSI was born June 15, 1934 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was a graduate of California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo in California, with a degree in architectural engineering. After earning a degree, he went on to work for a number of firms in San Luis Obispo before opening his own, Ethan Jennings Jr., AIA, CSI. Throughout his career, he was the architect on various large and small scale projects ranging from hospitals, theaters, schools, homes, multi-family residential complexes, office buildings, and libraries. Jennings’ work took him to many states as well as foreign countries. He began his Las Vegas architectural practice in 1986. He was an active member for over 35 years with the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), holding numerous offices within the organization.
