Abstract

Collection is comprised of materials dating from approximately 1971 to 1996 about the Las Vegas Clark County Library District. Collection materials also include Charles Hunsberger's subject files from when he was library director of LVCCLD. The collection includes annual financial reports, clippings about the library district, photographs, master plan documents for Nevada libraries, and staff newsletters. In addition, the collection also includes materials documenting Hunsberger's efforts to secure a $22.2 million library bond in 1985.

Scope and Contents Note

Collection is comprised of records maintained by Charles W. Hunsberger during his tenure as Director of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District (LVCCLD). Materials documenting the LVCCLD including annual financial reports, clippings about the library district, photographs, master plan documents for Nevada libraries, and staff newsletters. In addition, the collection also includes materials documenting Hunsberger's efforts to secure a $22.2 million library bond in 1985; Hunsberger's library director subject files; photo albums of library staff and a scrapbook detailing the renovation of the Flamingo branch of LVCCLD; and various books and magazines on architecture that were used as references for building and renovating libraries in the LVCCLD.

Biographical / Historical Note

Charles Hunsberger was born in 1929 in Elkhart County, Indiana. Hunsberger was the director of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District from 1972 to 1994. He is credited with expanding library facilities and services across Las Vegas, Nevada and Southern Nevada during the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was responsible for building more than twenty libraries in Southern Nevada; including securing a $22.2 million library bond in 1985 which resulted in the Green Valley, Las Vegas, Spring Valley, Sunrise, and West Las Vegas libraries. The bond also allowed for the renovation of the Flamingo branch library (known as the Clark County Library). He also secured a $70 million library bond in 1991 for construction and $10 million for library materials for seven new libraries and two renovations. As of 2016 Hunsberger lives in in Reno, NV where he has lived since retiring from the LVCC library district. He visits Las Vegas regularly to attend meetings of the Las Vegas Rotary Club.

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District (LVCCLD) is the library system that services Clark County in Southern Nevada, including the city of Las Vegas. The LVCCLD was established as the Clark County Library District in 1964. LVCCLD includes twenty-five branch libraries around Clark County.

These records are unprocessed. The materials were quickly reviewed to provide a general description of the contents of each box and an estimate of dates represented in the material. Loose papers were foldered. No further work was performed on the materials.
