Show moreThe National Scientific Balloon Facility (NSBF) Annual Report FY 1976 includes information on flight services by the NSBF, flight operations improvements, electronics improvements, long duration development program, balloon materials and quality control, personnel, funding, panel meetings, other meetings, base improvements, and plans for FY 1977. 86 flights were flown during FY 1976. Eighteen flights were flown from Canada, Sicily, Brazil, South Dakota, and Oklahoma. The flight success rate was 83.7%. Of particular note was a flight launched from Sicily that had a float duration of 84 hours and was recovered near Lexington, Kentucky. Another development of note was the increase in the number of atmospheric science flights, which can be attributed to the interest aroused by the ozone-depletion controversy. Show less
