Show moreWe present initial results from the Multi-Fluid Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (MFLFM) global MHD model of solar wind entry into the magnetoshere for extended periods of constant southward IMF. The model currently allows for two ion species and a massless neutralizing electron fluid and we initiate the simulation by assuming the solar wind plasma is composed of 99.99% of one ion species. The individual particle masses of both species are assumed to be the same. Under these conditions, a quasi-steady magnetosphere is allowed to develop at which point the parameters of the two ion species are reversed in the solar wind and the entry of the once trace but now dominant species into the magnetosphere is followed. We observe plasma entry at the cusps and along both the dawn and dusk flanks. The plasma entry at the flanks convects into the inner magnetosphere initially before propagating further downtail. These results provide a means of comparing the entry of self-consistent fluid parcels with those derived from test particle studies for similar IMF conditions. Show less
