Snowfall often coats the foothills of the Rocky Mountains even when it has melted from the Flatirons in Boulder, Colorado, below. The flat rock formations are layers of sandstone that were steeply uplifted and then eroded when the Rocky Mountains were born. The Boulder area averages about 80 inches (200 centimeters) of snow each year, with even higher amounts closer to the foothills.
